Is Modern Orthodoxy an Endangered Species?

Posted March 16, 2010 - 6:59am

The Institute for Jewish Ideas and Ideals is co-sponsoring a conference in Jerusalem with Neemanei Torah vaAvodah, an activist modern Orthodox organization in Israel. The event will be held at the Begin Center in Jerusalem, April 1, from 8 am until 1 pm. The theme is: "Imagine the Future: Join the Discussion", and the goal is to re-energize the modern Orthodox community in the face of increasing religious extremism. The conference will include presentations by leading thinkers and Torah scholars, as well as programs for children.

If you plan to be in Jerusalem on April 1, Hol haMoed Pessah, you may register by going to www.toravoda.org.il.

This conference is part of the Institute's expanded efforts to work with like-minded groups and individuals in Israel to promote the ideas and ideals for which the Institute stands--an intellectually vibrant, compassionate and inclusive Orthodox Judaism.

The Institute recently partnered with Memizrach Shemesh--a Jerusalem-based organization--to publish a guide for teachers and group leaders (in Hebrew) dealing with Sephardic/Middle Eastern customs for the Jewish holidays. The booklet shows how these customs teach values of social justice and responsibility. The booklets can be ordered through the online store of the Institute:  www.jewishideas.org .
