Congregation Ezra Bessaroth of Seattle Celebrating its Centennial Anniversary

Posted July 26, 2010 - 8:30am

Congregation Ezra Bessaroth is celebrating its centennial anniversary with a series of events in August. The congregation was established in Seattle by Sephardic Jews who had come from the Island of Rhodes. Ezra Bessaroth continues to be an active and vibrant Sephardic community, and includes many members of different backgrounds who are attracted to the warmth and beauty of the Judeo-Spanish Sephardic tradition.

On August 19, at 7:30 pm, Rabbi Marc D. Angel will be lecturing on "The Lasting Legacy of the Judeo-Spanish Civilization."  Rabbi Angel, who was born and raised in the Ezra Bessaroth community, will be delivering the sermon on Shabbat morning, August 21.  He will also be speaking at a luncheon following services, on the topic: "Tradition and Modernity--a Sephardic Approach to Jewish Law". On Shabbat afternoon, he will be giving a class based on teachings of the sages of the Island of Rhodes.

The 100th Anniversary Gala Dinner of Ezra Bessaroth will take place on August 22. The Institute for Jewish Ideas and Ideals has contributed copies of Rabbi Angel's book, "The Jews of Rhodes", to be given to those who attend the Gala Dinner. The Institute is proud and pleased to share in the celebration of this historic occasion.
